Mappin & Webb made this antique 1900 sterling silver handled curling iron with
beautiful hand engraved monogram. Mappin & Webb traces its origins to a silver
workshop founded in 1775. It now has retail stores throughout the British
Isles. Mappin & Webb has held Royal Warrants to British monarchs since 1897.
Curling irons such as this one were heated on the fire or the stove. The hair
was then clamped between the hinged arms and wrapped around it, creating tiny
curly tendril locks. The inside of the handles are signed with maker's mark,
"Mn&Wb" (attributed to Mappin & Webb) and also marked with a lion (sterling
silver) and date letter "e" (1900). The end of the handles are hallmarked again
with the maker's mark and lion. The inside of the handles a carved swirl
design. In the center (on only one handle) is a fancy hand engraved monogram
that appears to read, "TH".

Each vintage piece has been examined by a graduate gemologist. Stone carat
weights stated represent approximate weights which can vary by the limitations
of measuring set gems. Due to the age, antique & vintage jewelry and sterling
objects are often not perfect, and may have normal signs of surface wear, or
small imperfections due to hand crafting or production in a long gone era
rather than mass-manufactured nature. This is what makes each piece special and
unique!
