The Mala, which in Sanskrit means "garland of flowers", is a traditional
Buddhist rosary with one hundred and eight grains. One hundred and eight is a
sacred number in the Buddhist tradition. Multiple of twelve and nine, it
represents the nine planets in the twelve houses of the zodiac. Multiple of
four and twenty-seven, it represents the four quarters of the moon in each of
the twenty-seven constellations or lunar dwellings. These mansions are the
twenty-seven divisions of the ecliptic that the moon passes through each month.
108 corresponds to the trials that Buddha had to undergo, or the 108 names he
uses.
Mala is used for the recitation of mantras.
In Hinduism, the simple fact of carrying this rosary on oneself, would have
spiritual virtues.
