to nature’s elements.

My Products are almost all made from a shea butter base.
Why shea butter?
Well, why do I eat whole grain bread and not bleached wonder bread? Gross!
Same reason. Shea butter is a superior moisturizing oil extracted from the
“nut” (fruit actually) of the Karite or Shea tree found in Africa. It has been
used for thousands of years. You can find two types of shea butter available on
the market for use as a cosmetic: Unrefined (or Raw Shea) and Refined or Ultra
Refined.
Unrefined or Raw Shea Butter is a butter that has not been processed with any
chemicals. It is mechanically extracted and filtered to remove particles from
the shea nut that remain in the butter from the first extraction process. By
mechanically filtering it the butter then retains all of its vitamins and
healing properties. I only use unrefined raw shea butter. That way all the
natural benefits remain in the products.
My products feels and smells different from what I am used to. Why?
Let me explain. American consumers can be a little too used to things looking
pretty, feeling light and creamy, being white in color and smelling “clean”
(i.e., linen, bleach) trust me, I was just like that! What you don’t realize
until you go organic is all of that “pretty” is 100% artificial. I do use a
preservative, but it is fermented radish liquid. It doesn’t smell bad (i.e.
manure) it smells clean but the undertone will have you guessing. To quote my
husband, “What is that smell? It’s not bad, but I can’t put my finger on it.”
My product arrived hard like mud- what do I do?
If your product was in the belly of an airplane or back of a mail truck
overnight, it might have been cooled and hardened. Shea butter will be hard.
The face cream, the eye cream, body butter, etc. needs to be massaged in the
palm of your hand and “worked”, then applied. You can tell the quality of Shea
butter buy how fast it melts when it has contact with body temperature.
My product has a grainy texture, Help?
Shea Butter has so many benefits (anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, does not
clog pores, superior humectant), but it can be finicky when it cools. Sometimes
it can cool with a grainy texture. If that happens, you can put the product in
a microwave-safe container and warm it for 20 seconds. For the lip balm, rub a
small amount in your fingers before applying. Or simply press it with your lips
to melt it if it is lip balm. Remember the texture you have become used to
include ingredients like petroleum, wax, or palm oil (from rain forests, not
kidding) to keep it 100% smooth 100% of the time.
My product has a “smell”. My daughter said it smells like “grandma” help!
For people used to buying face products from grocery stores, shea butter can
be off-putting AT FIRST. Let me explain. American consumers can be a little too
used to things looking pretty, feeling light, being white and smelling “clean”
(i.e., linen, bleach) trust me, I was just like that! What you don’t realize
until you go organic is all of that “pretty” is 100% artificial. Parabens
processed palm oil, and literally bleach make that thin white lovely face cream
in the store look and smell like what you are used to. Real shea butter has an
earthy (not manure), nutty smell. When applied, the smell dissipates. My
husband thought shea butter was off-putting at first. Now hardly notices it. He
has never noticed it when I wear it. Me personally, I think it smells great!
Like the smell of fresh mango, or natural peanut butter, or the smell of
freshly cut lawn, of chopped wood. Recently my son and I opened an old-ish jar
of store bought (expensive!) face cream and both our eyes started watering from
the bleach smell. I can’t believe I never smelled that before.
